Nghe An has 600,000 ha of natural forest. It is a valuable resource, providing practical benefits not only for people living nearby and even for those who live far away from the forest. According to recent statistics, more than 1434 species of trees have been identified as detailed, Nghe An forest has 129 species (8.4%). Of which, 8.1% of tree species are classified as high tree species with high economic value, with natural growth rates exceeding 25m. With many effective measures such as forest zoning, protection and restoration, especially the planting of new forest, our forest resources are being recovered and developed strongly. However, for large timber plantations large timber products account for only a fraction of the 400 species that are being used for large timber and other products. About 12-15 species have been planted on an industrial scale, including those that are still in the process of exploration, testing, accounting for 3-5%, a very low proportion compared to Potential exists.
Obstacles and challenges initially.
Growing big trees are still facing some obstacles and challenges. In terms of knowledge, growers lack much in-depth understanding of forest ecosystems; Large timber species in general and specific characteristics of each type of timber such as the need for soil, climate, light, nutrition … at different ages of the crop; differences between species in a forest population in terms of flowering ability, results, techniques for seed processing and preservation; the ability to plant seedlings, the ability to create forests by artificial forest plantation. For example, some species can only produce large timber when sparsely grown or scattered, and as such they can only produce single products (mother-of-pearl, oak, geranium). ..). Some plant species are highly prone to pests and diseases, such as early branches, poorly developed axes, very low commercial wood (lim, fat, sliced flowers) .
In terms of socio-economic status, large timber trees are often required to be planted on topsoil of good forest quality for high productivity. In these areas, it is often a remote area where people’s lives are still difficult, with little capital for intensive cultivation, transportation and other conditions. In addition, large tree species are often slow growing species, requiring at least 30-40 years, sometimes hundreds of years for large timber to be used in buildings, furniture processing as well as high-end interior decoration products. It is also an obstacle for forest owners who are not interested in planting large trees, but only grow fast growing species, short business cycles in 5-7 years can be harvested. Or they grow large trees but also to harvest “non” products, serving the immediate market. The awareness of immediate and long-term benefits of planting large timber trees for the main timber products is very limited. The above obstacles are gradually overcome by many positive solutions.
Potential to develop.
In fact, there are many potential advantages to grow large trees in the province. Located in the Northern Hemisphere tropical latitudes, there is a natural distribution stretching south of the Himalayan flora, so Nghe An is rich in biodiversity, including a large variety of wood. Specialties such as: nails, candles, crabs, peanuts, samu oil, kim syrup, white pine, red pine Muong Ti, Muong Ngai … These indigenous timber species are hard to find in places. any other. As a result, the location, climate and location of the plant are no longer a major obstacle when these valuable timber species are developed by artificial forestation at their original site.
As a result of the implementation of the project “Capacity Building for the Forest Seed Sector of Nghe An (VTSP / DANIDA)”, our province has established a network of forest plantations with an area of 150 ha including 20 species of wood seedlings The national standard has been integrated into the national information network, ensuring good seedlings for afforestation. With many decades of experience, many large timber species have been successfully planted in Nghe An and have been developed into technical processes that are very effective in production. Cinnamon trees in Que Phong, Quy Chau and Quy Hop have been successfully cultivated for hundreds of years and have spread to many neighboring areas. The pine resin has become a high-yielding, environmentally friendly plastic, which has become familiar to people living in poorly populated areas. Fat trees, bodhi trees, rubber trees have become the main crops in Anh Son, Thanh Chuong and Nghia Dan areas. Recently, many large timber species such as Mexican slices, high yielding eucalyptus, hybrid acacia, silver oak, red oak, drought resistant oak, etc. have been planted on a variety of site types. The economic ecology in Nghe An such as Anh Son, Thanh Chuong, Tan Ky, Nghia Dan districts, initially very good results. According to the ABARE (Australia) forecast, by 2020, large timber products from plantations will only cover 46% of the Asian market. Many countries in the region from the 60s of the last century have a very strong strategy to grow tens of thousands of hectares of large timber forests. Many regions with similar planting conditions like our province have harvested large timber with the productivity of 25-30 m3 / ha / year after 25-30 years.
End-harvesting density of 300-400 trees / ha. The price of large logs is 400-450 USD / m3 (FOB price). This can help growers calculate the economic value of investing in large timber trees for small commercial timber or commercial timber.
Afforestation of large timber trees is economically practical and has great long-term benefits for the country.
